Sony Classics, Amazon, Magnolia Among Top IDA Nominees

The International Documentary Association unveiled the list of nominees for this year’s 36th IDA Documentary Awards, with Sony Pictures Classics, Amazon Studios, and Magnolia Pictures all picking up key nominations.

Sony Pictures Classics’ The Truffle Hunters follows a group of aging men hunting in the woods for a prized quarry, the Alba truffle. In addition to a nomination for Best Feature, filmmakers Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw are in the running for Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Amazon Studios’ Time follows Sibil Fox Richardson, fighting for the release of her husband, Rob, who is serving a 60-year prison sentence. Time picks up nominations for Best Feature, Best Director (Garrett Bradley), and Best Cinematography (Zac Manuel, Justin Zweifach, Nisa East). In addition, director Garrett Bradley will be the recipient of IDA’s 2020 Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award.

Magnolia Pictures’ Collective is one of ten nominees for Best Feature, and follows journalists as they uncover health care fraud in the wake of a deadly nightclub fire in Bucharest, Romania. Directed by Alexander Nanau, this doc was also selected as Romania’s entry for Best International Feature Film for this year’s Academy Awards.
