Amazon's 'Sound of Metal' Takes Home Two Oscars

April 26, 2021

Sunday night's Academy Awards presentation saw Sound of Metal, Amazon Studios' drama about a drummer who begins to lose his hearing, take home the trophies for Film Editing and Best Sound.

The film also got nods in the Best Picture, Best Actor (for Riz Ahmed), Best Supporting Actor (for Paul Raci), and Writing (Original Screenplay) categories this year.

The sound team awarded for Sound of Metal consists of Nicholas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Coutollenc, Carlos Cortes, and Philip Bladh. In a film whose central premise revolves around sound and the absence of it, this achievement comes as no surprise.

The film's second award of the night, for Best Film Editing, went to Mikkel E.G. Nielsen. Nielsen thanked the film's director, Darius Marder, in his speech: “Thank you for your incredible vision, for inviting me on this life changing journey. It’s been like following a rainbow for me and today I feel like we found the gold.”
